Interiors for a single room, 5.1 channel sound mixing and editing studio in Pune, run by
Tejashri Joshi & Raj Jadav. The requirements were straight forward. An accoustically sound
proof and well treated room for sound mixing and editing.
The challenge was with the
timeline and the budget - both being very tight.
We had two weeks time and 1 lakh budget for the interiors alone, including acoustical
treatment of 3 walls and 2 doors and 2 windows, flooring, lighting and furniture, but
excluding AC, additional readymade acoustic panels and all gadgets. Given the tight
budget, we worked everything backwards.
Synthetic wool for the walls was the single most expensive item in the list. Our biggest
saviour was decent quality, reclaimed and re-usable pine or packing wood, cut to size of a
desired section, which we got by the kilo from a wood depot the other end of town. This
was used for making the wall panel frames to pack with synth wool. The cloth for the wall
panels also came cheap, as we managed to get most of that too by the kilo.
There were a lot of wires that needed running through the floor. Being a rented
establishment, we could not make much changes to the existing floor. So we ran some
conduits on the existing floor and raised the floor level around it using 18mm pine wood
planks fixed to the floor and covered by a nice carpet. In the end we managed to
complete the project in time for work to start (sound mixing for a marati feature film),
with only a 5% budget overshoot.
